Virgil C. Suniner Nuclear Station Docket No. 50/395 Seismic Qualification Review Team SER Confirmatory Issue 1.7.21

Dear Mr. Denton:

In response to SER, Supplement No. 3, Confirmatory Issue 1.7.21, Item 3, South Carolina Electric and Gas Cmpany (SG&G) acting for itself and as agent for the South Carolina Public Service Authority, has decided to utilize limit switches to cmply with NUR93 0737, Item II.D.3 requirenents for positive pressurizer safety valve indication.

Previously, SG&G had proposed the use of a Westinghouse Acoustic Leak Detection System to perform this safety grade function.

However, contractual and scheduling problms associated with the se.ismic and environmental qualification of this equipnent has resulted in the decision to utilize a different means of cmplying with NRC criteria in NUREG 0737.

In addition, this decision will allow SG&G to install qualified switches prior to full p]wer operation.

As previously discussed during a conference call on mbruary 12, 1982 with Mr. Kane and Mr. Ice of the NRC staff, the limit switches SCE&G will use are manufactured by Crosby, the same cmpany which supplie:1 the safety valves. These switches are designed to mount on top of the valves and are considered to be an excellent choice because of their specifically designed application for these safety valves. It is SCE&G's understanding that other utilities have j

oniered these limit switches to cmply with NURIE 0737 requirements.

Environmental and seismic testing of these switches is presently underway by Crosby with m known problems at this time. SCE&G has reviewed the design and test plan for these switches and is awaiting final test empletion, when testing is emplete (presently schedulal to be cmplete 4/82) SCE&G will review the test results. It is mt anticipated that any problems will develop frm testing that would preclude their eventual use at the Virgil C. SunTner Nuclear Station.
