HATCH NUCLEAR PLANT - UNIT I NONROUTINE RADIOLOGICAL ENVIRONMENTAL OPERATING ANOMALOUS MEASUREMENT REPORT This. report, which supplements the previous submittals on LER 50-321/1979-021 provides updated-data on tritium levels in groundwater samples taken from locations where the average _ value over the ' fourth quarter of 1981 exceeded samples according to Table 3.2-3 of the ETS.

There continues to be no significant impact on the public health and safety due to these readings which exceeded the report level.

As reported previously, any releases to unrestricted areas are through the outfalls of the drainage system; such releases continue to be minuscule and result in insignificant doses to the public.

The tritium levels at test holes N9B, P16, T3, and T18 have been reportable for a few years.

The tritium levels at test holes T10 through T13 became reportable during the third quarter 1981.

The tritium levels found in samples gathered during the fourth quarter at these locations, along with the history of the average quarterly levels, are presented in either Table 1 or Table 2.

The long time reportable locations are listed in Table

-1, and the recently reportable locations are listed in Table 2.

Test holes N9B and T3 are located in the area north of the turbine building.

As previously reported, the high tritium levels in this area are attributed to process water releases from an open-ended line near Pl7B which occurred prior to March 21,

1979, when this extraneous source was terminated.

It is seen that the levels'at N9B and.T3 increased slightly during the_ fourth quarter.

Test holes P16 and T 18, as well as T10 through T13, are located in the CST-1 area.

The high tritium levels in this area have been attributed to leaks associated with the condensate transfer pumps.

Some of these leaks occurred several years ago.

As reported in the last Quarterly Supplement, another leak to one of the CST-1 condensate transfer pumps occurred in July, the dike floor flooded, the condensate-water was subsequently drained to radwaste, a sudden increase in the tritium levels in a number of nearby test holes followed.

It is seen from Table 1 that there was little change in the tritium levels at T18; no sample 'was available at P16 due to the dry weather.

It is seen from Table 2

that the levels dropped substantially at T10, Tll, and T12.

The quarterly average level at T13 increased slightly (indicating some - movement of the groundwater in that direction), however, the final reading for the quarter was low.
