Dear Mr. Parker:
M M
Subject:
Steam Generator Tube Degradation d2 (McGuire fluclear Station, Unit 1)
Subsequent to our cceting with you on November 20, 1981, at which you briefed the staff on the details of the potential for ! team generator tube degradation at McGuire Unit 1, you provided us with a. status report by letter dated Dececber 29, 1981. Although your report was summary by nature it did not reveal that Unit 1, during its limited period of operation, has experienced steam generator wear type indications similar to non-domestic Westinghouse plants utilizing a similar Model D steam generator. You are conducting an operating, testing and surveillance pro-gram which should reveal any early mechanical vibration phenoimnon.
In addition, Westinghouse, we understand, is conducting a separate testing program described to the staff during the Novenber 20, 1981 briefing.
A meeting is being arranged for January 15, 1982 or earlier, to be held at Westinghouse, Pittsburgh, PA, to further discuss both yours and Westin9 ouse's h
progress in more fully understanding the vibration phenomenon as related to McGuire and other U.S. plants contenplating the use of similar steam generators.
We request that the nceting include the following matters: (1) Update of each item presented by both Duke & Westinghouse during the llovember 20, 1931 meeting; (2) A correlation of McGuire data with data from other Westinghouse operating Model D steam generators; (3) Specific criteria (go,no-go) for operation of McGuire Unit 1; (4) Steaa generator design modification selected /or under con-sideration by Duke; (5) Effect of item (4) on Unit 1 operation (schedule) and Unit 2 co@letion of construction and startup schedule; (6) Observation of Westinghouse test / lab areas relating to S/G test program; and (7) Westinghouse suggested special S/G startup test program including criteria.
