Docket Nos. 50-369, 50-370 -

Dear Mr. Denton:

The purpose of this letter is to provide Duke Power Company's response to Mr. Robert L. Tedesco's letter of January 7, 1982 which requested a status update on the Model D steam generator concerns. This response primarily describes the Westinghouse testing and research programs. Duke Power Com-pany is following the Westinghouse program closely but to date has not reviewed all of the technical details sufficiently to make an independent assessment of the applicability of all facets of the program to McGuire. In our vicw the Westinghouse program has not reached the point where any firm conclusions can be reached. As a result Duke Power Company has de-veloped a program for continued operation of McGuire through February 15, 1982 which does not rely on the Westinghouse program to date. (See my letter of January 26, 1982). Operation beyond February 15, 1982 will be based on a review of information available at that time. The entire Westinghouse program is described in the attached document for completeness even though much of the information is preliminary and in the end may not be applicable to McGuire. Note that this submittal contains information considered proprietary by Westinghouse Electric Corporation. Enclosed are: 78o/

1. Five copies of " Response to Request from NRC -

Additional Test and Status on Model D Steam ' Generator Preheater" (Proprietary).

2. One copy of Application for Withholding, AW-80-53 (Non Proprietary).

As this submittal contains information proprietary to Westinghouse Electric Corporation, it is supported by an affidavit signed by Westinghouse, the 8202040184 820129 PDR ADOCK 05000369 p PDR
