Dear !!r. Parris:
We have reviewed the concerns expressed in your letter of October 28, 1981 and its enclosure. The preliminary results of the Los Alamos Vital Area Analysis were coryared to the infomation provided in the enclosure to your October 28 letter. Regulations currently being fomulated should allow a minimum nur.ter of vital areas to be pro-tected.
Indeed, under the concept of reducing this minimum number the compartmentation of residual heat renoval and core spray system components would appear to be eliminated. Our conparison shows only 10 areas per unit requiring controls and.not the 14 areas per unit expressed in your letter.
We believe, based upon limited data, that compartmentalization will not be net.cly as burdensome as you have anticipated. Complete resolu-tion will mquire the final vital area analysis from Los Alamos and a vital area validation site visit.
It would be prudent then to await the completion of the current rulemaking effort and the final results of the vital area analysis.
