Re: Brunswick Steam Electric Plant, Unit No.1 H! !,

By letter dated June 30, 1981, you advised us that our requirement'toh' recalculate limiting transients with the ODYN transient code by January 1982 would result in reanalyses that would only apply to the final three months of the current Brunswick Unit 1 operating cycle.

Brunswick Unit 1 is presently licensed under the REDY code. You further advised us that it is your intention to complete the current Brunswick Unit 1 operating cycle without performing reanalyses using ODYN. Subsequent analyses would, however, be performed using the ODYN code.

We have compared the ODYN and REDY codes and determined that, under certain conditions, the use of the REDY code results in a more conservative analysis. Specifically, if scram times are bounded by the ODYN Option B scram time distribution, the Option B calculation would be expected to be less limiting than REDY.

If that is the case, then delay of the ODYN code analyses until the next operating cycle is reasonable and acceptable.

Therefore, if you determine that Option B is applicable to your facility and you elect to delay the required ODYN analysis until the next operating cycle, you are requested to inform us, in writing, by January 31,1982 of i

your decision, and submit your conclusion that Option B is applicable to Brunswick Unit 1.

The reporting and/or recordkeeping requirements contained in this letter.

effect fewer than ten respondents, therefore, OMB clearance is not required under P. L.96-511.
