Hendrie, Deputy Director for Technical Review Directorate of Licensing TECICIICAL ASSISTANCE REQUEST FOR REVIEW OF PROPOSED REPAIR PROCEDURES FOR B&W CONTROL ROD DRIVE MOTOR TUDE DISCOSTINUITIES Babcock & Uilcox (B&U) informed the AEC at a Itay 11, 1972 neeting in Bethesda that many of the control rod drive (CRD) motor tubes on all planta having DGW NSSS are suspect of containing hot tears on the inside tube surface. DSU is currently assessing the n,ed for repair or replacenant of some of these C2D assccblics. They tentatively propo::cd several nethods for repairing these CRD notor tubes some of.+.ich would involve enceptions froc ASME code requirements. Other possibilitics are to lower the design requirements for these motor tubes or present a fracture ncchanics analysis to show the acceptability of the existin:; rotor tubes with these discontinuitics. The assistance of the Mechanical Engineering Branch in the review of the proposed repair procedures and design requirements for B&W control red drive notor tubes is requested.
In this regard, it is also requested that the Mechanical Engineering Branch be represented at the June 6, 1972
