SUBJECT:

STORAGE OF SNM IN KARDEX UNIT Based on your application dated January 11, 1993, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued on March 26, 1993, Amendment 23 to License SNM-33 authorizing storage of special nuclear materials (SNM) in the Kardex unit.

In your application, you limited the Kardex storage shelves to 360.

On March 30, 1993, Mr. John Conant informed us that the actual number of storage shelves in the Kardex differs from that previously reported.

To clarify this discrepancy, CE should provide information detailing any safety implications, the root causes, and action taken to ensure that the root causes have not contributed to other problems or discrepancies in the documentation regarding the consolidation of operations at the Hematite facility, and will not contribute to such in the future. CE should not load or store SNM in the Kardex unit until the NRC has reviewed this information.
