Dear Mr. Kovach:
PD3/2 Reading File
SUBJECT:
Il0N STATION, UNIT 1 AND 2 - REQUEST FOR BULLETIN 89-02 SCHEDULE EXTENSION (TAC NOS 74336 and 74337)
We have completed our review of your request dated January 26, 1990, to extend
-NRC Bulletin 89-02 inspection schedule for Zion Station Units 1.and 2.
We find your request to be unacceptable.
However, the staff recognizes your concern in regard to ALARA program considerations. Therefore, based on ALARA'considera.
tions and the results of the past inspections performed at Unit I during the past September 1989 refueling outage, an acceptable resolution of Bulletin 89-02 at Zicn Unit 2 should include: (1) inspection of twelve of the Anchor Darling (A/D) Swina Check Valves Model S350W during-the' current refueling outage for Unit 2 (2) the remaining twelve valves should be inspected during the following refueling outage or a scheduled outage of sufficient duration of four weeks or longer, and (3) if any cracked bolts are found during the current Unit 2 refueling outage, all 24 valves will be inspected during the current outage for Unit 2.
With respect to Unit 1,(an acceptable resolution of Bulletin 89-02 at Zion Unit i should include:
- 1) consideration of the results of the inspection performed on Unit 2 valves, and (2) inspection of ten of the valves during each of the next two outages of four week or longer provided the inspection results do not warrant inspecting the remaining twenty during the next outage.
If you have any questions concerning this matter please contact me.
Sincerely,
/.s/
