Dear Mr. Tallman:

Subject:

Confirmatory Piping Analysis The NRC staff has instituted a program of performing an independent confirmatory piping analysis for plants undergoing OL review.

For the Seabrook Station, this analysis will be performed by contract personnel at Pacific Northwest Laboratory.

The purpose of this indepandent analysis is to verify that I

the subject piping system meets the applicable ASt1E Code stress criteria and I

vendor allowables.

The staff dcrs not intend to resolve differences between its calculated stresses and loads and those of the applicant unless Code criteria or vendor allowables are not satisfied.

This program allows verification, on a sampling basis, that the applicant has met the ASME Code requirements, has met vendor interface requirements, and has adequately incorporated the NRC regulatory guides and review plans into the plant des 1gn.

To proceed with the analysis, the staff will require certain information to be supplied by the applicant.

The staff has scheduled a site visit for December 4,1981 so that lab personnel may adquaint themselves with the plant and view the chosen piping system.

The applicant should have the below requested information available at the site during tne visit. At that time, the staff can discuss the piping analysis with the applicant's design engineers and decide whether any additional infomation is necessary.

The staff has previnsly used this approach on other plants and found it useful.

The applicant should have two copies of the following infonnatioh available nm for the sf te visit to the Seabrook plant:

D 1.

Piping analytical and isometric drawings sufficient to model the system

$8 2.

Support drawings 3.

The piping system design specification x4 4.

Valve weights and CG's o"

5.

Appropriate response spectra g*

6.

Appropriate anchor point movements (thermal and seismic)

)

g; 7.

Any design change notices not yet incorporateo into the piping or l

n support drawings (later DCN's should be forwarded as received) l

Applicable equipment allowable loads 9.

The selected piping system for Seabrook is the main steam piping including the sr.fety and relief valves.

The findings of the analysis will be incorporated into the Safety Evaluation Report.
