Dear Mr. Stolz:

By letter dated September 21, 1981, your staff requested additional in-formation needed to complete your review of the safety-grade anticipa-tory reactor trip (ART) modification at Crystal River Unit 3.

Florida Power hereby provides responses to your four questions.

Item 1 Because of conflicting information provided previously, describe which variables will cause each trip (e.g.,

do the sensors only monitor hydraulic pressure for the main turbine and each of the two MFWP tur-bines or is the discharge pressure also monitored for each MWFP?).

Response 1 The sensors used for signal input to the Reactor Protection System Anticipatory Reactor Trip (ART) will be pressure switches actuated decreasing oil pressure in each turbine trip oil system.

The sensurs will monitor the oil pressure of the governors for the main turbine and for both main feedwater pumps (MFWP).

The discharge pressure of the MFWPs will not be monitored for ART.

r Mr. John F. Stolz October 12, 1981 Page 2 Item 2 Describe your separation criteria (e.g., Does it conform to Regulatory Guide 1.75, Revision 2?).

Response 2 The separation criteria used in the design of ART was that of Regulatory Guide 1.75,. Revision 2 and IEEE 279-1971.

Item 3 State when your pressure sensor qualification data will be available.

Response 3 The pressure switch is currently being qualified by its manufacturer, Automatic Switch Co. (ASCO).

ASCO expects the qualification to be com-pleted in accordance with the requirements of IEEE 323-1974 and IEEE 344-l75 by the end of March 1982.

Item 4 State how often input to sensor (hydraulic pressure) through trip signal will be tested in entirety.

Response 4 The pressure switches to be installed for ART will be functionally checked during scheduled refueling outages.

The monthly channel checks include an electronic check only.

Very truly yours, Ls/ i 4. M William A. Cross Manager Nuclear Licensing Corces(10/9)C5-3 4
