r PROCEDURE FOR ELECTRIC RESISTANCE HEAT TREATHENT A
pts.
rrB-1. SCOPE: This p'rocedure describes the specific controls to be applied during the Electric Resistance Method of local heat treatment.
TrB-2. C'ENERAL: All requirements for post veld heat treatment as stated in the General Procedure CNT-r Section rr shall be. considered a mandatory part of this specific procedure.
FrB-3. HEATED BAND: The area of control during local heat treatment operations shall consist of a circumferential band that encompasses the welded joint and the adjacent material extending on both sides of the veld of the greatest width. The adjacent material shall be of a distance equal to the weld thickness or two inches, whichever is less.
O The temperature of the metal from the edge of the controlled band out-ward shall be gradually diminished.
FrB-4. CONTROL Or HEAT TREATMENT TEMTERATURE: The temperature of the metal being beat treated shall be contro11eo by manual or automatic adjustaent of the upply current to the heating elements. The temperature of the metal shall be measured by thermocouples attached to surface of the material being heat treated.
Thermocouples, thermocouple extension and potentiometric equipment of the same calibration type, i.e.
Tyre K. J. T. shall be used to contin-uously record time-temperature readings throughout the controlled cycle of the heat treatment operations.
The temperature recording equipment shall be in calibration and have an Indicating scale of sufficient size to distinguish a minimum of 250r deviations.

PLACDtDIT OF THERMOCOUPLES: Pipe less than 10 inches 15 diameter shall have a minimum of one thermocouple attached as near to the top as pos-sible.
Pipe 10 inches in diameter and greater shall have a minimum of two thermocouples attached a distance of at least 1/2 inch but no greater than two (2) inches from the edge of the weld.
The thermocouples shall' sense the temperature 180 apart and opposite sides of the welds with one themocouple as near to the top as possible.
Suitable precautions shall be employed to protect the continuity of the themocouples and thermocouple leads from overheating.
FFB-6.
PLACDENT OF RESISTANCE HEATEjR : The size and quantity of resistance heaters to be employed, as well as the placement of those heaters in relation to the weld, shall be in accordance with the manufacturer's re-(
er==*ndations, provided requirements of paragraph TTB-4 are met.
With the thermocouples and beating elements properly connected TTB-7. PROCEDURE:
and the adjacent piping preparly supported, insulation blankets shall be placed around the entire joint together with the heating elements and as much of the adjacent piping as required to prevent excessive migration of heat from the area being treated (insulation blankets shal.1 sxtend a minimum ~of 18" beyond the last turn of the coll).

accordance with the General Procedure for Heat Treatment and the ASME Code.
When the joint has reached the specified bolding temperature, it shan be maintained at that level for the prescribed period of time. With the insulating blankets remaining in place, the current shall then be adjusted and controned as required to anow the joint to cool at a specified rate until it again reaches a temperature of 800*r.
Below 8000T., the current may be secured and the insulation blankets removed, allowing the joint to cool in stin air. Ambient conditions p
t shall not fall below 50 r. Only la special during this final pF applications and with prior approval of the Quality Assurance Manager shall the time-teeperature limits be exceeded.
The required recording device shall zumain in service throughout the controlled cycle of the heat treatment operation and shan be frequently checked in order to promptly correct any error in temperature conditions 1
