Dear Mr. Sato:
This letter is provided in response to your August 1,1981 letter requesting infonnation about the accident at Three Mile Island. Specific answers to your questions follow:
Q.1.
and Q.3.
The Three Mile accident initiated in and involved R.1.
and R.3 only Unit 2.
Q.2 R.2.
The accident began at 4 a.m. on March 28, 1979.
Q.4.
Unit 2 remains in a safe shutdown condition. Although some R.4 cleanup activities have been completed, much work remains to be done. This work includes decontamination of equipment and surfaces in the reactor and auxiliary buildings, reactor vessel head and fuel removal and processing of contaminated water. (See enclosures for more detailed information.)
Q.5.
R.S.
Approximately 570,000 gallons of contami.ated water collected in the auxiliary building during the accident has been pro-cessed (i.e., decontaminated) through the EPICOR-II systeu.
This water is presently being stored onsite pending a decision on ultimate disposition. Processing of radioactive in the reactor building basement (approximately 700,000 gallons) is due to begin this month via a Submerged Demineralizer System (SDS). The SDS will also be used to decontaminate water (approximately 96,000 nallons) contained.in the reactor coolant system.
