Dear Mr. Denton:
Is. Elinor G. Adensam's (NRC/ DOL) letter of November 24, 1982 requested several outstanding information responses from Duke Power Company in order that the NRC can complete its review of the Unit 2 Operating License Application as well as Unit 1 close out matters.
Specifically, these items are as follows:
- 1) Unit 1 inservice inspection program
- 2) Unit 2 relief requests (if any) for preservice examination
- 3) Analyses justifying removal of all primary coolant thermal sleeves for 40 years plant life
- 4) Model D2/D3 steam generator design modification report
- 5) Unit 2 environmental impact appraisal for additional operating period (up to 40 years)
- 6) Unit 2 Category 1 masonry walls.
b FF is the latest revision of the inservice inspection plan for McGuire Nuc1 car Station Unit 1.
The inservice inspection program for Unit 1 specified in l ffD13, the revised plan is currently in the process of being upgraded to the 1980 edition of Section XI of the ASME code.
The inservice inspection program for Unit 2 will An.)lmers be identical to the upgraded Unit 1 program.
- b. f/OM The preservice inspection plan for McGuire Unit 1 is described in the McGuire FSAR (Volume 11, Supplement 1) in response to question 121.14(1). Attachment 2 gives d' l~/%ed changes to this description of the Unit 1 program which modify the description to reflect the program as it applies to Unit 2.
Unit 2 relief requests for preservice

Mr. W. O. Parker, Jr. 's letter to you dated July 13, 1982 provided analyses justifying removal of all primary coolant thermal sleeves for 40 year plant life on McGuire Unit 1.
Because of similar design, the evaluations performed for Unit 1 8301050285 821222 PDR ADOCK 05000369 Q
Harold R. Denton December 22, 1982 Page 2 as described in the letter also apply to Unit 2.
The Unit 2 reactor coolant pipe thermal sleeves corresponding to the seven Unit 1 sleeves described in Section 2.2 of Attachment 1 to the July 13, 1982 letter have teen removed.
Current status and schedule for the Model D2/D3 steam generator modification on Unit I were provided in my December 15, 1982 letter to you.
The preoperational and startup test schedule for McGuire Unit 2 currently is as follows:
Initial Fuel Loading March 1, 1983 Initial Criticality May 16, 1983 Begin Low Power Testing May 16, 1983 Begin Power Ascension Testing June 6, 1983 -(Subject to change Begin Testing at 30% Power June 13, 1983 if extended low power Begin Testing at 50% Power July 4, 1983 testing required)
End Testing at 50% Power July 18, 1983 It is our intention to install the modification prior to escalation above 50%
power.
The environmental impact of an additional operating period for Unit 2 is still being evaluated. We will keep you appraised of its status. provides the requested information for the Unit 2 (and Unit 1) category I masonry walls.
