SUBJECT:

INSPECTION OF MASONRY WALLS AT LASALLE-REQUEST FOR TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE During the period of June.11-17, 1982, Mr. RT I;ipinski provided Region III assistance in. inspecting allegations relat'ing to the use of chloride in concrete.during the construction of the LaSalle Site screenhouse and to deficiencies in construction of masonry walls. Resolution of these issues was documented in our special inspection report 50-373/82-35 and 50-374/82-06.

Since that time additional affidavits have been received by Region III regarding deficiencies during the construction of masonry walls at LaSalle.

On August 11, 1982, Messrs. Nerelius, Lipinski and Jackiw met with two forcer bricklayers from LaSalle and Mrs. Rorem of Illinois Friends of the Earth and Mr. Devine of GAP to discuss these affidavits. As a result of this meeting some additional questions were raised on.the adequacy of work-nanship during construction of masonry walls at LaSalle. To resolve these additional concerns, Region III plans to conduct additional inspections into,this matter.

Interview additional personnel and obt.ain signed statements, 2

Review and evaluate'the licensee's actions regarding IE Bulletin 80-11, 3.

Review CECO's and the masonry contractor's QA program relating to con-struction of the casonry walls, 4.

Independently monitor coring operations that occur.on Unit 1 and 2 as a result of codifications and, 5.

As appropriate, conduct and coordinate independent testing of masonry walls (this may include obtaining additional cores and/or conducting,,,

nondestructive tests of the walls).
