SUBJECT:
REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INF0PJ4ATION - SUPPRESSION POOL.
TEMPERATU.tE Lli41T (SHOREl#tt HUCLEAR POWER STATION)
During safety / relief valve operation, steam quenching instability occurs bnen tne suppression pool water is at an elevated temperature, which inauces scvere vibratory loads on the containment structures. General Electric nas proposed (letter dated December 20, 1974, I. F. Stuart to E. G. Case) a technical specification of suppression pool temperature limits that requires operator actions to limit the bulk pool temperature below 160 cegrees Fahrenheit. This limit was established on the basis -
of experiments performed in a foreign country.
Currently, we are reviewing the adequacy of the poci temperature limit for all B,JR containments. To date, we nave issued a request for additional information on REDE-21076-P, " Test,Results Employed by GE for BWR Contain-cent ano Vertical Vent Loads.
This report contains the justification for Ine prcposed pool temperature limits. Since the referenced report has been classified as proprietary under our rules and since we have determined that inese requests are proprietary, they are, therefore, being withheld from puolic disclosure.
de are enclosing the complete request for additional information in order to keep you fully informed. Responses to Questions 1, 2, 4 and 5 will be provided by the General Electric Company.. Question 3, however, is plant specific and cust be adoressed by you.
Please advise us within seven days' after receipt of this letter of the scheculed date for yo6r response.
