By letter of October 31 1989, you responded to NRC Lulletin 89 02, " Stress j

Corrosion Cracking of HIgh Hardness Type 410 Stainless Steel Internal Preloaded Bolting in Anchor Darling Model $350W Swing Check Valves or Valves of Similar Design," for the McGuire Nuclear Station. The bulletin requested l

4 you to identify, disassemble and inspect certain types of swing check valves l

with Type 410 stainless steel bolting material and if the bolting material is I

J cracking, or has failed, then take appropriate actions.

Your reply noted that no Anchor Darling Model $350W swing check valves are installed or are in warehouse stock for either McGuire unit.

With respect to valves of similar design, you stai.e that eight valves manufactured by Atwood & Morrill have been recently installed in the Unit 1 cold leg accumulator discharge lines and eight more are in your warehouse stock as spare valves intended for future installation in Unit 2.

You have material certifications for these similar valves, including hardness testing results from the fastener

supplier. The fasteners have hardness values less than those discussed in the bulletin and are not highly torqued. Therefore, you have concluded that the bolting material is not susceptible to stress corrosion cracking and that these similer valves need not be inspected.

Based upon your response of October 31, 1989,f this item, if any,,will be by as summarized above the subject TACs are deemed closed.
