Dear Mr. Bauer:
HRC's Office of Inspection and Enforce'.ent (IE) desires to have an environmental radiation study performed by I.rgonne National Laboratory (/.NL)in1.'es0 Chicago, Illinois. AFL will perform a study to define the cuantity of thorium residuals in the unlicensed arcas in '.'est Chicago. N:L will also define suit-abic methods of disposing or contro111no these residuals in order to most effectively protect the public health end safety. As a pre-lininary to the study a fence should be installed around the site or sites beinq studied so as to nininize tublic exposure and in-trusion during the work and until final disposition of the radio-active materials. - Funds should be set aside to remove any fencing when the thorium residuals have to:n renoved. The study should be completed in FY 1977 uith a written report submitted to the NRC, IE obligates $5%000 for these services. The IE technical monitor t on this offert is Leo !!iceinbothem, Chief, Safety & Environmental 4 Progrens Brench (FTS P.-492-7347). The IE atinistrativo monitor is Elliott Creher (FTS 8-492-7213).
