of this office during the period January 1-31, 1990, of activities authorized

by NRC 0perating License-NPF-47 for River Bend Station, and to the discussion

of'our findings with you.and other members of your staff at the conclusion of

'the inspection.

Areas examined during theiinspection included followup. of an event, licensee

event report review, operational safety verification, maintenance observation,

main steam tunnel temperature detection modification, and surveillance test

. observation.. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of selective

examination.of procedures and representative records, interviews with

personnel, and observations by the NRC inspectors. The inspection findings are-

documented in the enclosed inspection report.

.The NRC staff considers;the work practice which led to the resin spill on

January 24, 1990, to be. unacceptable. This event indicates that persons within

'the plant staff may not fully. appreciate the. potential personnel hazards and1

Lradiological consequences which may result from work ~ activities on nonsafety--
