How do radiation protection standards reflect previous BEIR reports?

f The Commission's current radiation protection standards in 10 CFR Part 20 were established prior to the issuance of the first BEIR report. The BEIR reports have, in general, confinned the safety basis supporting the standards estab-lished by the Comission and have been considered in developing the revisions to 10 CFR Part 20, which is presently before the Commission in final fonn. The NRC staff, of ten with the assistance of consultants with expertise. in radiation protection and health effects, reviews the pertinent reports and recommenda-tions and determines how to apply new scientific information within the context of the regulations for occupational and public radiation protection. The Comission will continue to evaluate the scientific data and national and international recommendations based upon those data and will initiate further rulemaking when warranted to protect the public health and safety.
