MkN 1.; 1977 MED0RANDUM FOR: Harold S. Bassett, Acting Director Office of Planning and Ana~ysis
(
FROM:
Lee V. Gessick Executive Director for Operations
SUBJECT:
NRC CASELOAD FORECASTING
{
The Caseload Forecasting Panel has provided an important service in the past by establishing estimates that were useful elements in our t
planning process.
We must continue to examine and improve our forecasting techniques.
It is especially important that the Panel develop official NRC caseload forecasts that can serve as the single i
I source for internal and external users. To this end, I am directing you as Chairman of the Forecast Panel to 'take on some new tasks.
Specifically, I want the Panel to develop and refine a consistent
[
forecasting methodology; to make periodic (quarterly or semiannual) t'orecasts; and to make reconinendations to me based on the results of the forecasts.
I expect the forecasts and their implications to play a critical role in NRC planning, budgeting, and control.
Given this expanded scope of the Panel's responsibilities and the i
expected importance of the official NRC forecast, you should ask the appropriate Office Directors to designate a senior staff member to participate in the Panel's deliberations.
Please reconvene the Panel with this expanded charter and brief me soon thereafter.
