Dear Mr. Jones:

i We have reviewed and evaluated your June 2,1981, submittal which requested schedular relief for certain Inservice Inspection requirements for the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant, Unit No.1 (the facility). We have con-cluded that the specific requirements were impractical to conduct during the Spring 1981 outage, because of high radiation levels in the examination areas, and should be deferred until the 1982 refueling outage when mechanized equip-ment will be available and hydrolazing will be possible.

Therefore, pursuant to paragraph 50.55 a(g)(6)(1) of 10 CFR Part 50, we grant relief from the specific schedule requirements that you have identified to be impractical, and impose the alternative schedule cited above. We have determined that this action will not endanger life or property as the common defense and security and is otherwise in the public interest giving due consideration to the burden upon Carolina Power & Light Company that could result if the requirements were imposed on the facility.

A copy of our Safety Evaluation is enclosed.
