. Narrative Report i

for LER 50-366/1981-064 On 6-26-81, while performing Diesel-Generator Manual Start surveillance procedure on 2R43-S001A diesel generator, it was discovered that the speed adjust switch would not raise or Iower diesel speed.

The failure of the speed adjust switch precluded matching the frequency of the diesel generator to J

the system-prior to synchronization.

Diesel generator 2R43-S001A was declared inoperable.

Tech Specs 3.8.1.1.6 which requires 3 separate and independent operable diesel generators 2

could not be met.

Tech Specs surveillance requirements 4.8.1.1.1.a and '4. 8.1.1. 2. a. 4 were performed to demonstrate operability of remaining AC sources.

l The problem with the speed adjust switch was attributed to the synchronizing

motor, a

part of the diesel governor.

The t

synchronizing motor, a split field,. series wound, reversible type, is used to remotely position the speed adjusting gear.

The motor was disassembled for in:,pect~ ion and the brushes found to be dirty.

After cleaning the motor was reassembled and returned to. service.

The diesel generator manual start surveillance procedure was reperformed with satisfactory results.

The unit is now in full com'liance, and no further p

reporting is required.

This is a nonrepetitive event.

There were no effects upon public health and safety due to this event.
