_m Gentlemen:
Atlantic Richfield holds N.R.C. License No. 12-00140-05 for a 1000 curie cobalt-60 sealed source, which by amendment No.11 has been extended to August 31, 1981.
We have applied, by letter dated June 2,1980, for permission to prepare and ship the sou:ce, but were informed that we would I
first need an approved quality assurance program.
We have obtained NRC approval for our Q.A. Program (attached), and would like to proceed with the disposal.
In our letter to you dated June 2,1980, we requested permission to use a G.E.1600 cask, however, we now wish to use a G.E. 700 s
cask, which has adequate shielding ability to meet DOT requirements for this shipment. We will use an inner chamber which will hold the source on center and will be filled with leadshot to reduce the surface ratiation level when the source is lif ted out of the cask at the burial site.
A drawing of the shipping container insert is attached.
Attached are letters from General Electric regarding the Q.A.
status of the cask.
Also attached are outlines of the preparation procedure and the y
source shipment procedure.
It is necessary to cut off the t9
." basket" handles, as the entire source basket is too tall for the m
shipping cask. We will cut well above the cobalt rods to avoid
~'
g
, any risk of cutting into the source. Also enclosed is a diagram of g
g c our cave.
