Dear Mr. Dail:

SUBJECT:

USE OF ASME CODE CASES FOR THE PERKINS AND CHER0 LEE PLANTS By letter dated, May 28, 1981, you requested authorization to use ASME Code Cases 1481-2,1592-14 and 1644-8 in the farication of the primary system components for the Perkins and Cherokee plants. We have completed ou-review of your request and conclude that these ASME Code Cases may be used in the construction of the containment hydrogen recombiners subject to the conditions discussed below. The use of these code cases thould also be docu-mented in the FSAR.

Code Case 1481-2 (N-19-2), dated July 11,1977, " Elevated Temperature Design of Section III, Division 1, Class 2 and 3 Components", had been conditionally l

acceptable provided that applicants desiring to use this revision of the code case indicated how the time and temperature limit specified in part (5) of the code case rias achieved. The code case was subsequently annulled by the ASME Boiler and Preswre Vm.sel Committee on July ll,1980.

As a result, approval of the code case has been withdrawn by the Commission and it should not be used in the construction of components ordered on or after the annulment date.

Therefore, the code case may only be used in the construction of compo-nent during the period it was in effect and approved by the Commission, and with the condition discussed abov" Code Case N-253 was developed by the ASME to replace Code Case 1481 (N-19).

Code Case 1592-14 (N-47-14), dated July 10, 1978, " Class 1 Components in Elevated Temperature Service,Section III, Division 1", was an acceptable code case and may only be used in t he construction of components during the period that the code case was in effect and approved by the Commission.

Revision 14 of the code case has been superseded by Revisions 15, 16, 17 and 18 and should be used in the construction of compon ents ordered on or af ter July 10,197h and prior to May 14, 1979.
