SUBJECT:

EFFECTS OF TERMIriATIfG ALL AUTOMATED EQUIPMEtiT Af40 MICROFICHE There would be a tremendous impact on the Records Services Branch if the automated services and microfiche were terminated. As of today, a total of 5,482 Commission Papers have been converted to microfiche to free approx-imately 50 cubic feet of space. A total of 3,842 Vendors' Tcpical Reports have been converted to microfiche freeing up approximately 95 cubic feet of space. With no hope for additional sDace for these vital recorcs, there would be no available space for the daily ficw of new records ccming into the Agency. The terminals have been time-saving in retrieving documents with little decriptive information and in the retrieval of documents sub-jected to FOIA Requests. There have been many trips saved to the repro-ducticn machine when only one page of a 20 page document is needed anich can te gotten frca the video terminal. The one feature that I.ecule like adcec to the system is search by Sucject Category. Tc take :ne au:cmated system away would mean an acditional increase of staff to provide service to the I;RR staff for retrieval and re Vodut icn. The system has crevided tremendcus savings in search time for documents.

In most cases, the system provides the only means of retrieval of documents subject to the Rocovan requests.

Finally, we are responsible for -he maintenance of valuable, irreplaceable archival records. Continual wear and tear and possible loss or misfiling of these records is a situation that would cause this Acency a creat ceal of embarrassment if it is necessary to go directly to the files, time after time, to pull documents for reproduction versus using micrcfiche and TERA.
