Dear Mr. McGaugby:
SUBJECT:
SEISMIC INPUT PROVIDE,D BY BECHTEL FOR INDEPENDENT ANALYSIS OF GRAND GULF As you are aware, we have instituted a program of performing an independent structural analysis of the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station. This analysis is being performed by our contract personnel at EG&G/ Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (EG&G). We have recently been notified that the rotational component of acceleration, supplied by Bechtel Corp, for use as seismic input to the analysis, appears to be incorrect.
In recent telephone discussions. EG&G personnel were informed by Mr. Ron Beck of Bechtel that the apparent error had been identified and was being corrected. By letter dated March 12, 1981 Bechtel submitted the corrected time histories to EG&G for use in their seismic analysis.
In view of the above, a question has been raised as to whether the incorrect seismic input resulted from a generic error in a computer program used by Bechtel for Grand Gulf analyses, or rather from an isolated computa-tional mistake. Accordingly, you are requested to verify that the above computational error detected by EG&G has no bearing on other aspects of structural analysis performed for Grand Gulf plant structures by Bechtel.
Sincerely, y
