Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station Docket No. 50/395 Five Year Projection of Licensed Operators at the Virgil C. Summer i

Nuclear Station (Dec. 30, 1980 Letter)

Dear Mr. Denton:

As requested by Mr. F.J. Williams, Jr., South Carolina Electric and Gas Company acting for itself and as agent for South Carclina Public Service Authority provides the following information in regards to our December 30, 1980 letter addressing five year projection of licensed operators at the Vircil C. Summer Nuclear Station.

Please find attached, a revised Attachment V of our December 30, 1980 letter. This attachment has been revised to include a curve which reflects predictions for the number of licenses for operations personnel only. This curve was derived by applying the same turnover and exam failure rates for personnel other than operators as was previously applied to the entira group.

These numbers were then deducted from the total group of licensed personnel as previously stated.

,I In regards to the number of operating shifts to be implemented at the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station, it is planned to initially operate with j

the basic four (4) shift rotation which is the minimum required for plant coverage. As indicated on Attachment V, it is planned to add a fifth shift in June, 1982. This additional shift will allow operations personnel to be available on " day shifts" in order to participate in required requalification training classes. Twenty-one (21) licensed personnel are required to imple-ment these five shifts. As discussed with Mr. Williams, it is also planned to add a sixth shift to the rotation at such a time that there are sufficient licensed personnel availabic to do so.

This additional shift would allow for i

operations personnel to be available at the plant on a " day shift" basis.

These personnel would be utilized for various activities such as performing l

necessary administrative duties, providing relief to other shifts for sick l

leave and vacation, and performing special operation tasks such as waste disposal, etc.

It should be noted that personnel are presently onsite and available for performing these duties with the exception of relief for li-censed personnel.

Mr. Ilarold R. Denton January 22, 1981 Page 2 The above discussion should clarify our intentions concerning the planning for both the number of li ensed operators and the rotation shift utilization.

If you have any additional questions, please let us know.

Very truly yours,

/
