Consumers Power Company ATTN: James 11. Campbell President 212 West Michigan Avenue Jackson, Michigan 49201 Gentlemen:

It has been of interest in the nucicar industry that in some reactors fueled with UO ' Pouer changes may be followed by an increase in the 2

iodine content in the primary coolant. Data taken at the Tsuruga power reactor from April to sy'1970 indicate that following shutdown of.the d

. reactor, the-1-131 concentration in the primary coolant increase In order to understand temporarily by a' factor of one hundred or more.

this phenomenon better, we request that you obt' in measurements at the a

Big Rock Point facility of primary coolant samples, taken at a frequency consistent with changing operating parameters, e.g.,. variation in power level and primary coolant cicanup. Samples taken from just before shutdown until the iodine content in the primary system icvele off would also be important.

We plan to discuss this potential problem at a meeting in our Bethesda of fice on September 23, 1971. We request that you send a representative and provide any pertinent data you might have.
