Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

In the initial response to IE Bulletin 80-15, Carolina Power &

Light Company committed under item three to conduct a test to verify operability of the Emergency Notification System (ENS) following a loss o~ off-site power. The ENS is powered from the emergency bus of Unit No. 1, which has an engine driven emergency generator for automatic backup power.

Due to a mechanical failure of the starting components of the Unit No. 1 emergency generator, the test could not be conducted as scheduled, although the generator had been tested successfully the previous week. The repairs could not be completed before the scheduled l

outage ended, and the unit was returned to service.

i l A test procedure verifying ENS operability has been developed l and will be performed as soon as practicable depending on operating conditions, but no later than January 1, 1981.

l l 13:is change in schedule was discussed with s aur Mr. Austin Hardin un November 24, 1980.
