Dear Mr. Hairston:

SUBJECT:

INSTALLATI0H OF HARDENED WETWELL VENTS, E. I. HATCH NUCLEAR PLANT UNITS 1 AND 2 (GENERIC LETTER 89-16) (TACS 74869 AND 74870 The NRC staff has reviewed your letter of October 24, 1989, in response to Generic Letter 89-16, " Installation of a-Hardened Wetwell Vent." Your.

1 intention to install hardened wetwell vents at Hatch Units 1 and 2 under the provisions of 10 CFR 50.59 is acceptable. Because we view your stated i

intentions to be a firm comitment to install the requisite modifications, we will not proceed with backfit analyses for the Hatch facilities.

If our understanding is not consistent with your intentions, please provide a detailed explanation of the comitments made in your response supporting the deviations from our understanding.

The staff had expected that all actions related to the vent modifications would be completed by January 1993. However, your proposed schedule for completion of the modifications to Unit 1 extends beyond the January 1993 l

date. We request that you reevaluate this modification schedule and, within 30 days of receipt of this letter, provide either a revised date for completion of the Unit 1 modifications or a detailed explanation of why the January 1993 date cannot be met.

Please call me if you have questions.

Sincerely,

/s/
