Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station Docket No. 50/395 Updated Management Organization

Dear Mr. Denton:

Pursuant to NRC management audits of July 8-10, 1980 and February 9-11, 1981 and correspondence to the NRC staff on September 9,.1980, thrch 4,1981, March 25, 1981 and May 13, 1981, South Carolina Electric & Gas Company herewith provides additional inforration on some recent personnel additions and structural changes to our nuclear organization.

Mr. Melvin N. Browne has recently filled the position of Director of the Independent Safety Engineering Group (ISEG). As stated in previous correspondence the ISEG is an independent review group located on site reporting off-site to the Group Manager, Nuclear Engineering and Licensing.

Mr. Browne is a graduate mechani-cal engineer and has had experience as a shif t foreman at the Joseph M. Faley Nuclear Plant. He has an SRO license on Farley plant and intends to qualify for an SRO license on Summer plant.

Another recent addition is Mr. Vincent R. Albert, as Technical Assistant 4

to the General Manager, Nuclear Operations with principal efforts devoted to the areas of maintenance a'd maintenance planning.

Mr. Albert has had experience with n

l the scheduling and modifications for the first refueling outage of Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station, Unit 1 and the planning and supervision of testing and startup activities at Beaver Valley, Unit 2.

To augment our plant staff Mr. Gene G. Soult has been hired as a control room foreman. His qualifications include an SRO license on Farley Station and experience as a shift foreman and shifc technical advisot at Farley.

l Dr. James H. Barker and Mr. Glenn E. Higginbotham have recently filled j

positions as staff health physicists.

Dr. Barker has a PhD. in physics and since 1977 has designed and taught courses and implemented laboratories in the health physics area.

Mr. Higginbotham previously held the position of health physics i

foreman at F.:rley plant. Also added to our health physics organization is Dr.

Gregory M. Gowdy as supervisor of radiation environmental programs.

Dr. Gowdy has a PhD. in nuclear chemistry and has had experience at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

  • May 27 -1981 Pcg2 Two Additional changes have been made to the Nuclear Engineering and Licensing group (see attached organization chart). These changes represent increases in personnel assigned to that group and add to the experience level of the organization.

South Carolina Electric & Gas Company believes these changes have enhanced our technical expertise and will improve the management and operation of the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station.
