Nuclear Eng. File 2.8950 Re: Previous Response from E. H. Crews to J. P. O'Reilly, dated March 12, 1980

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

NRC IE Bulletin 79-13, Revision 1 defined examination and inspection require-ments for the feedwater piping inside containment. As required by the bulletin and committed to in our previous response, volumetric inspection of the feedwacer no::le-to-pipe welds and adjacent pipe and nozzle areas has been completed. Th.

results of these tests were acceptable for all examinations in accordance with the requirements of AS!E Section III.

During hot functional testing, the feedwater system supports and snubbers in-side containment were visually inspected as required to verify operability and conformance to the design. The results of these visual inspections were acceptable.

As indicated by the previous response, SCE5G has evaluated an acoustical monitoring system to detect and locate feedwater leaks inside containment. The system has been evaluated favorably and is in the process of being placed into service.

As required by the bulletin, volumetric examination of the emergency feedwater nozzels and piping welds and a visual inspection of feedwater pipe supports will be performed at the first refueling outage. The resiits of these examinations will be submitted at that time.

If you require further information, please advise.

Very truly yours, s .

T. C. Nichols, Jr.
