Dear Mr. Grier:

SPOOL WELD BUILDUP INSUFFICIENT EXAMINATION 10CFR50.55(e), POTENTIAL SIGNIFICANT DEFICIENCY NO. 1 AND 2 UNITS HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION On October 10, 1980, a verbal report was made to Region 1, Office of Inspection and Enforcement representative, Mr. J. Mattia, advising of a potential significant item.

Weld buildups on pipe spools were determined to be not sufficiently examined and corrective measures to reexamine by conventional measures were committed.

However, six pipes cannot be examined due to inaccessibility.

Two are embedded in concrete (JE-12 inch diesel fuel tank vent lines) and four buried t

and backfilled outside Unit No. 1 (EA-36 inch service water lines).

Supplemental information was supplied to the NRC in writing on November 12, 1980 and the following is an interim report in accordance with the requirements of 10CFR50.55(e):

The Bechtel Power Corporation, PSE&G's Architect Engineer, is currently reviewing this concern 'and the status of the review is as follows:

The examination of all accessible outside diameter buildups has been completed.

Examination of accessible inside diameter buildups is in progress with a projected completion date of January 30, 1981.

Completion date for this activity is projected for February 27, 1981.

Determination of reportability per requirements of 10CFR50.55(e) is being assessed and a report will be made to the NRC upon completion of the examination and review noted.
