H. B. ROBINSON STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT UNIT NO. 2 LICENSE NO. DFR-23 g 9 DOCKET No. 50-261 ,

RESPONSE TO IE BULLETIN 81-03

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

In response to your letter of April 10, 1981, transmitting IE Bulletin 81-03, Carolina Power & Light Company submits the following response for H. B. Robinson Steam Electric Plant: -

No Asiatic clams (Corbicula) have been collected in Robinson Impoundment or Black Creek by CP&L biologists since the initiation of field sampling in 1974. Other studies on Black Creek below the Impound-ment and on Prrstwood Lake by Enwright Laboratories (1980) for Sonoco Paper Company bve also not found this species. Based on these investi-gations, CP&L does not believe Asiatic clams (Corbicula) are present at H. B. Robinson. This is probably due to the naturally occurring low pH and "blackwaters."

Please find attached a copy of the Robinson Impoundment Biological Monitoring Program During 1981; also included is a layout of the Robinson Impoundment and Black Creek sampling stations. The last sampling for identification of Asiatic clams was in February, 1981, with none being found in any samples. Also, on May 19, 1981, during routine cleaning of the condenser, there was an inspection for Asiatic clams (Corbicula) which showed none present.

Carolina Power & Light Company plans continued biological monitoring of the Robinson Impoundment in accordance with our NPDES Permit and the requirements of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. There vill also be continued inspec-tion of the Robinson condensers during outages of sufficient length.

Mussels (Mytilus 3.), a saltwater species, are not present in the freshwater of the Robinson Impoundment.

The manpower expended for this review and for the required report preparation was approwimmtely twenty-one hours.

We trust that this satisfies the requirements of IE Bulletin 81-03.

Yours very truly, B. J. Furr Vice President Nuclear Operations SHC/je (7803)
