RESPONSE TO NOTICE OF VIOLATION ITEM REPORTED DURING NRC INSPECTION CONDUCTED FROM JANUARY 11-13, 1981 NRC COMMENT Technical Specification 3.3.3.1 requires Radiation Monitoring instruments for Containment Gaseous Activity (RMS-160) and Containment Particulate Activity (RMS-159) be calibrated every eighteen (18) months.
Contrary to the above, the Containment Gaseous Activity monitor (RMS-160) and Containment Particulate Activity monitors (RMS-159) were not calibrated every 18 months + 25% in that RMS-159 initially calibrated on 1/27/79 was not cali-brated for 23 1/2 months and RMS-160 initially calibrated on 11/22/78 was not calibrated for 25 1/2 months.
This is a Severity Level V Violation (Supplement IE).
RESPONSE
1.
ADMISSION OR DENIAL OF THE ALLEGED VIOLATION The Notice of Violation is correct as stated.
2.
REASONS FOR THE VIOLATION This infraction was the result of an administrative error.
The previous test was not completed for a lengthy period of thne due to interfering maintenance. The subsequent periodic test was scheduled to be performed within 18 months of the completion date of the previous test rather than the start date of the previous test.
3.
CORRECTIVE STfPS TAKEN AND RESULTS ACHIEVED When notified of this infraction, the calibration was scheduled and per-formed within one week. The calibration check was completed without ree

quiring any adjustments, which indicates that the monitors remained in calibration throughout this period.
4.
CORRECTIVE STEPS WHICH WILL BE TAKEN TO AVOID FURTHER VIOLATIONS To prevent recurrence, future tests will be scheduled from the start date of the previous test.
5.
DATE WHEN FULL COMPLIANCE WILL BE ACHIEVED Full compliance has been achieved.
