HUMAN FACTORS CONTROL ROOM DESIGN REVIEW / SITE VISIT BYRON STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2, AND BRAIDWOOD STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 The Human Factors Enaineering Branch of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has organized a team to conduct human factors control room design re-views.

The team is developing a schedule for performing reviews through the remainder of calendar year 1981.

In order to finalize the schedule and plan the type of review, the staff needs to know whether your preliminary assessment will be submitted by June 20, 1981, and if not, the date by when it will be submitted.

The enclosure lists criteria for determining whether the Byron Station, Unit 1 is ready for our projected five day control room design review. Please provide a statement relative to the status of Byron Station, Unit I for each criterion on the enclosure within two weeks after receipt of this letter.

After receipt of the information requested we will develop a detailed schedule and specific plans for our review.

By copy of this letter we are requesting that the appropriate I&E Inspector advise us of his assessment of the status of the control room relative to the criteria on the attachment.

At least 80 percent of all systems, (including 100 percent of ESF systems) have been turned over to the operating staff.
