FACILITY: Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station
SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF MEETING HELD ON APRIL 15, 1981 TO DISCUSS JCP&L'S NEW CORE SPRAY SPARGER DESIGN AND PIPING MODIFICATION AT THE OYSTER CREEK NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION On April 15, 1981, a meeting was held in Bethesda, Maryland with representatives of JCP&L and their consultants. A list of attendees is provided as Enclosure 1, and the meeting agenda is listed on Enclosure 2.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the licensee's proposed core spray modification submittal; the princi-ple areas presented by the licensee included (1) structural analysis, (2) effects of sparger on piant operation, and (3) core spray performance.
The licensee stated that the inherent design of the sparger assembly will minimize the potential for damage during the removal and reinstallation phases.
Removal as an assembly will also provide a better means of inspection capability.
The selection of the nozzle manufacturer has not yet been finalized, however they expect tc make the selection in the near future. The licensee has indicated that they do not anticipate any major problems for the remainder of the modifi-cation work effort. The licensee was advised that the staff is presently reviewing the submittal in detail. Based on this review and the m'eeting discussion, a request for additional information will be prepared and forwarded to JCP&L.
The licensee stated that the planned test program for the new sparger system is scheduled for a September 1981 completion and the final modification report will be submitted in October. The delivery of all parts and equipment is expected in the October-November time frame. JCP&L indicated the probable need for another meeting with the staff in September 1981 to discuss the test results, overall program configuration, and schedule. The plant is scheduled for refueling outage beginning November 30, 1981 at which time the licensee intends to start the implementation of the core spray modification program.
