Mr. J. A. Jones Senior Executive Vice President Carolina Power and Light Company 336 Fayetteville Street Raleigh, North Carolina 27602

Dear Mr. Jones:

By petition dated March 6,1981, you requested, in part, an exemptio,n to the last paragraph of 10 CFR 50, Appendix R. Item III.G.3 for the

~

Brunswick Steam Electric Plant (ESEP) Unit Nos. I and 2.

This exemption, would remove the requirement to install fixed fire suppression systems in the control room and cable spreading rooms based on your finding that the fire protection systems and equipment currently installed in those rooms are adequate. Therefore, you assert that installation of fixed fire sup-pression systems in the control room and cable spreading rooms wcule not enhance fire protection safety at BSEP Unit Nos.1 and 2.

We have found that this portion of your request provides a sound technical basis warranting further staff review. The schedule requirements for this item are, therefore, suspended in accordance with 10 CFR 50.48(c)(6) until final Comission action on this particular issue.

The remainder of your March 6,1981, request is still under consideration and will be the subject of future correspondence.

Sincerely, l

M Harold R. Denton, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation 1
