OF MEETING HELD ON MARCH 19, 1981 WITH THE CALLAWAY AND l

WOLF CREEK APPLICANTS l

A meeting was held on March 19, 1981 at the Bechtel Offices in Gaithersburg, Maryland with representatives of the Union Electric Company, Kansas Gas and Electric Company, SNUPPS Organziation and Bechtel. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss matters related to the service water systems ultimate heat l

sinks and component water systems for the Callaway and Wolf Creek facilities.

l The list of attendees is attached as Enclosure 1.

The significant points discussed are sumarized as follows:

1.

The applicants made = '? tailed presentation of the station service water system for the Call away and Wolf Creek facilities. The service water system for bor h nts consists of a general service water system and an essential service water system. The general service water system l

is a non-safety related system which provides a source of cooling l

water for heat removal to nonessential and essential plant equipment during normal operation and normal shutdown. The essential service water system is a safety related system and provides plant cooling for essential components under accident conditions. A detailed discussion related to compliance to NRC criteria, hazards analysis, and design and licensing issues for each plant was held.

Representatives of Union Electric Company presented a detailed description of the Callaway ultimate heat sink and representatives of Kansas Gas and Electric Company presented a detailed description of the Wolf Creek ultimate heat sink. Compliance of the heat sinks for both plants with NRC criteria was discussed.

3.

A presentaticn was also made related to the component cooling water system and its compliance with NRC criteria.

As a result of the presentations made and discussion which followed, we requested that the applicants provide additional information related to the following:

o 2-a) the Union Electric Company is to address protection of the Callaway mechanical draft cooling towers against icing and debris and the the time to take any necessary corrective action to restore the ultmate heat sink before exceeding design cooling water temperatures.

b) the Union Electric Company is to aoo.ess the need for tornado debris protection for the essential service water pumps in the Callaway ultimate heat sink retention pond.

c) the Union Electric Company shall correct Callaway site addendum Table 9.2.5 concerning the technical specification requirements for the ultimate heat sink d) the applicants are to clarify the prelube requirements for the essential service water pumps.

e)

Kansas Gas and Electric Company is to correct the FSAR discussion concerning the essential service water piping interfact with the non-seismic circulating water and service water system piping at Wolf Creek and shall provide an FSAR figure to show this piping arrangement.

The applicants advised that they would provide the requested information 5

by May 1, 1981.
