Dear Mr. Keppler:
g On July 7, 3980, Mr. C. E. Chmielewski of Public Service Company of Indiana, Inc., (PSI) notified your office of a potentially reportable item as required by 10 CFR 50.55(e). As part of the Construction Verification Program, all accc.sible mechanical splices (cadwelds) previously inspected and accepted, were reinspected in accordance with SPP-6.
A number of cadwelds were identified as not meeting the visual inspection requirements seg forth in SPP-6. These nonconformances were thoroughly evaluated, including radiography and tensile testing of some of the cadweld splices in question. The conclusion of this evaluation was that mechanical splices at Marble Hill will meet design strength requirements and are acceptable. A more detailed description of this matter is available in Section 6.0 of the report on the Construction Verification Program which has been previously submitted to your office.
As this deficiency would not have affected adversely the safety of operations of the plant, this item is not reportable. If you have any questions on this matter, please feel free to contact me.
