SERIAL NO.: NO-80-1499 Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation ATTENTION:

Mr. T. A. Ippolito, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 2 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C.

20555 BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT, UNIT NO. 1 DOCKET NO. 50-324 LICENSE NO. DPR-71 CONTAINMENT WATER LEVEL MONITORING

Dear Mr. Ippolito:

In our letter of October 18, 1979, Carolina Power & Light Company provided our commitment to meet the requirements of NUREG 0578. The ACRS item regarding containment water level monitoring (as described in Enclosure 6 to Mr. D. G. Eisenhut's letter of September 13, 1979) included a commitment date of January 1, 1981, for both Brunswick units.

Since the containment water level indication work requires that the torus area be drained, CP&L determined that the proper time to complete this modification would be during the outage for each unit that included the Mark I torus modifications.

The containment water level monitoring modification was completed on Unit No. 2 during the recent refueling / maintenance outage which included the Mark I torus nodifications.

Since the Unit No. 1, Mark I modifications are scheduled to be l

completed during the refueling outage set to begin March 6, 1982, it is our l

intention to defer the containment water level indication modification until that outage.

Please contact our staff if you have any questions or comments concerning this modification schedule.

i Yours very truly,
