APR o W 1980 Docket Nos. 50-369 and 50-370 Mr. William 0. Parker, Jr.
Vice President, Steam Production Duke Power Company P. O. Box 2178 422 South Church Street Charlotte, North Carolina 28242
Dear Mr. Parker:
SUBJECT:
SEPARATION FIELD AUDIT OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT AND SYSTEMS FOR MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 Thank you for your letter dated December 26, 1979 responding to our request that an independent field audit of installed electric systems and equipment be conducted at McGuire, Units 1 and 2, to detemine confomance to the FSAR separation criteria.
In your letter you noted the procedures and mechanisms for routing and install-ling sa,fety-related cables at McGuire, and that previous site visits have been conducted jointly by Duke and the NRC to check selected safety-related equip-ment and cable separation. Also, you noted that additional attention was warranted for the routing and separation of non-safety-related cables (assoc-iated circuits) that are routed with safety-related cables. We agree that your review along with the previous audit of selected cables and equipment contributes substantially to the overall safety of the plant. However, your review appears to lack an essential aspect of our request which is the per-formance of a detailed field audit by an independent group, one not involved in the original design and installation of the equipment and systems under audit. The NRC participation in the audit was limited in scope and did not include the detail we believe necessary.

l Nr. William O. Parker, Jr. APR 0 91980 Therefore, we continue to believe that an independent, plant-wide field audit of safety-related equipment and cables is necessary in addition to your planned audit of e.:sociated circuit cables. We request that an audit be performed as described in Enclosure 2 to our November 30, 1979 letter.
Sincerely, l
