WASHINGTON, D. C. 20355 n-APR 0 91980 Docket Nos. 50-369 and 50-370 Mr. William 0. Parker, Jr.
Vice President, Steam Production Duke Power Company P. O. Box 2178 42? South Church Street Charlotte, North Carolina 28242
Dear Mr. Parker:
SUBJECT:
LOCA ANALYSIS - COMBINED 10-INCH AND 6-INCH BREAK (McGuire Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2)
We have reviewed the qualitative evaluation of the combined failure of a 10-inch accumulator line and an impinged 6-inch hot leg injection line which was pro-vided in your March 22, 1979 letter.
It is not apparent that the qualitative evaluation of combined 10-inch cold leg and 6-inch hot leg breaks addresses the uncertainties associated with core flow during this event for a UHI plant.
It is not clear that the venting effects mentioned in the analysis would be beneficial when considering the possibility of core flow stagnation. Since we cannot draw a conclusive assessment from the qualitative evaluation to detemine that the postulated two-break event is not limiting, we require that you provide a sensitivity analysis of a 10-inch cold leg split break in combination with a 6-inch split break LOCA.
..d We request that this information be provided no later than May 9,1980.
Sincerely, (QM{.t'. %
