Dear Mr. Parker:

SUBJECT:

LOCA ANALYSIS (MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2)

As a result of our review of your LOCA spectrum analyses (FSAR revision 40) we require some additional information:

LOCA analyses for McGuire 1 and 2 have exhibited a trend of increasing calculated peak cladding temperature (PCT) with decreasing discharge coefficient (CD) for guillotine breaks (DECLG) with imperfect mixing assumed (imp). The analysis for DECLG Cd=0.4 imp gives a PCT of 2126 degrees F which is only 21 degrees F below the limiting design basis LOCA (DECLG, Cd=0.6 perfect, PCT =2147).

It is understoond that split breaks behave comparably to guillotine breaks with effectively smaller Cd's.

Justify that split breaks with imperfect mixing assumed (i.e., Cd=0.6 imp., or Cd=0.4 imp) are not limiting for McGuire 1 and 2.

We will require that this matter be resolved prior to exceeding 5 percent of full power. We therefore request your early response.

Sincerely, T.As0 R. L. Tedesco, Assistant Director for Licensing Division of Licensing cc: See next page 8011190 %
