Dear Mr. Chairman:

It is our pleasure to transmit to the Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment the enclosed Report to the Congress of the United States of America on "The Feasibility of Epidemiologic Investigations of the Health Effects of Low-Level Ionizing Radiation." This report was requested by l

the Congress in Sec. 5(d) of Public Law 95-501 and in Sec. 308 of Public Law 96-295, and has been transmitted to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House under separate cover.

The report is based primarily on the results of a fifteen month contractual effort, carried out under joint sponsorship of the Nuclear Regulatory Comission and Environmental Prntection Agency, with cognizance of the Department of Health and Human Services.

We appreciate the opportunity to present to the Congress this information on the options for Federal epidemiologic research on the health effects of low-level ionizing radiation along with evaluations of these options.

We are available to discuss any aspect of the study and hope that Congressional interest in this most important subject will continue.
