Mr. Cordell Reed Vice President Post Office Box 767 Chicago, IL 60690 Gentlemen:

This refers to the discussion between Mr. S. Gaitonde of your organization and Mr. D. Danielson of this office regarding Commonwealth Edison Company supplying the NRC with a section of the Quad-Cities Station Unit 2 loop B core spray injection piping that was removed during your recent refueling outage. Of particular interest is a complete elbow to pipe weld joint (approximately 6" of material on each side) containing several cracks near the weld.

New nondestructive examination techniques for stainless steel' pipe are being evaluated by E. G. & G. Idaho Inc. through a technical assistance contract with the NRC. The above mentioned piping, with know service induced indications, will serve as an examination specimen to evaluate new examination techniques.

We request that this weld joint and adjacent piping be decontaminated to the extent practicable and then be packaged and shipped to:

E. G. & G. Idaho Inc.

C. F. 601 Scoville, Idaho 83415 ATTN:

W. W. Rheinhardt (TAN 606)
