- CHICAGO, !LLIN005 4049C December 21, 1971 Mr. Boyce H. Grier Regional Director U.S. Atomic Energy Commission Division of Compliance, Region III 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137
Dear Mr. Grier:
This is in response to your letter of December 10 in which you informed us of an incident which occurred at Turkey Point 3 during preoperational testing.
In your letter you requested infor-mation concerning the design.of the main steam lines to which safety valves were attached.
The information you requested is listed below:
A - At Dresden Unit 1 the safety valves are not mounted on the steam line.
Safety valves are attached to the primary steam drum.
Thus, your concern with respect to Dresden Unit 1 is not applicable.
B - At Dresden Unit 2 safety valves are attached to the main steam line inside primary containment.
The spool piece to which the safety valves are attached consists of a forged pipe which was manufactured by the Kellog Corporation.
This pipe is A105 Grade 2 carbon steel which has a tensile strength of 70,000 psi and a minimum wall thickness of 1 3/32".
C - The design at Quad-Cities is similar to that at Dresden, with the exception that the spool pieces to which the safety valves are attached are A106 Grade B carbon steel which was manufactured by the Grinnel Corporation.
The pipe size is Schedule 80.
Should you require any additional information, please let me know.
Very truly yours, e.
