CALVERT CLIFFS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT Your submittal of January 15, 1980 (p7, NES 81A0564) states that the poison material consists of a B4C composite material fabricated by Carboruntum Company. Pages 16 and 29 of above report discuss the effect of irradiation on this composite material, referencing an October 1978 report, CB0-N-78-299.
a.
What is the composition of the B C composite material?
4 b.
Has this composite material been corrosion tested in borated water at the condition of the SFP? What were the results?
c.
Is the B4C composite subject to off-gasing under irradiation?
What provisions have been made to prevent swelling of the sandwich by off-gasing?
d.
Has the referenced irradiation data been submitted to and approved by NRC on another docket?
If not, please submit three (3) copies for our review, e.
If the binder material in the B C composite decomposes or 4
breaks down under irradiation, what prevents shifting of the B C particles?
