SUBJECT:

. CHICKAMAUGA RESERVOIR SE0! MENT DEPOSITION AND EROSION (TAC 73749/

[

y' 73750) - SEQUOYAH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 In the-staff's letter dated August 15, 1988, we.. requested that you provide the following information concerning the sedimentation.and erosion calculations for the essential raw cooling water (ERCW) intake. structure:' (1) the Chickamauga

- Reservoir cross sections used for the unstead

. cross sections through the reservoir, and'(3)y flow analysis, (2) the geologic the sediment scour and deposition H

calculations; This information except for the geologic cross sections'through l

~ the, reservoir was provided:in your letter dated May 18. 1989.

~

' Basedion the' enclosed safety evaluation, the staff concludes that the calcula-

- tions performed' by the Tennessee Valley Authority- (TVA) on the sediment deposition and' erosion' at the ERCW intake structure following the failure of the Chicka-

' mauga: Dam are conservative and acceptable. The staff concludes that there is assurance this sediment deposition and erosion will not prevent the -structure from perfoming its safety fanction and the data on the geologic cross sections ll through the reservoir are not needed.

E L

This closes out the staff's review of this issue. There is_no implementation required lby you.on this issue.

Although the staff concludes that there are no safety concerns about silt

_ blockage'of the ERCW intake structure, it recommends that TVA review DFoi i
